Invisalign is one of the most highly sought-after orthodontic treatments out there, and if you have them then you understand it’s important to keep your teeth clean. One thing to keep in mind is the potential for gum injury while wearing Invisalign. The best way to avoid this is to brush and floss regularly, but statistics from the American Dental Association show that only 50.5 percent of Americans floss daily.
Covering your teeth with clear braces for the recommended 22 hours a day can allow for bacteria to collect on your teeth more rapidly. To protect your teeth and gums from damage, here is a guide for flossing with Invisalign in Orlando.
Step 1: Remove Aligners
You’ll want to floss your teeth after eating, so you should first remove your clear aligners. Try to keep from eating while wearing your aligners, as chewing movements can damage them and prevent your teeth straightening. Instead, soak your clear braces or keep them in their storage case during your meals to guarantee they’re clean and bacteria free.
Step 2: Brush Your Teeth
The quickest way to remove food and debris from the surface of your teeth is to brush them. Spend at least two minutes brushing in circular motions to clear away the majority of particles. Of course, this usually won’t reach any food stuck between your teeth, but it essentially cleanses the most obvious parts of your smile.
Step 3: Use Mouthwash
Second to brushing, rinsing with water can also dislodge anything that might be stuck or hiding. Swish water after you brush to loosen anything, repeating the action as many times as you need. You might be surprised at how much was left behind. At the very least, you will have prepared your teeth for the final step.
Step 4: Floss
You’ll want to have enough floss to efficiently glide between your teeth, generally 12 inches of it. Wind the floss around your fingers to allow for one inch of string. While using your thumbs and index fingers to hold the line tight, gently push the floss between two teeth. Cup the tooth by making a ‘C’ shape with the string, and then proceed moving the floss up and down. Repeat this for the other tooth, and then continue working in between the rest of your teeth.
It’s important to make sure not to use the same string for multiple sections of your smile, as this can spread debris and bacteria. Always use a clean portion for each tooth.
After practicing several times, you might find it doesn’t take too much effort or time to floss before placing your aligners on again. By doing it regularly, you’ll ensure your teeth are clean and safe for your future straightened smile!
