What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum to create an injectable substance that relaxes muscles and prevents them from contracting.

The reason that BOTOX is so popular for getting rid of wrinkles is that it prevents the facial movements that lead to the skin folding in the first place. This creates a smoother, brighter, and more youthful appearance.

Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?

BOTOX can be used to lessen the appearance of:

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Marionette lines
  • Glabellar lines (between the eyes)
  • Fine wrinkles around the lips
  • Bunny lines
  • Under eye wrinkles
  • Platysmal bands (vertical lines on the neck)

BOTOX can be used both proactively to prevent wrinkles as well as after they have developed. Typically, if someone wants to stop wrinkles before they start, it’s best to begin BOTOX in the late 20s or early 30s. If you already have visible wrinkles, BOTOX can go a long way in making them much less noticeable no matter your age.

The Benefits of BOTOX

Woman receiving BOTOX injection

BOTOX allows a patient to drastically improve their appearance without having to go under the knife or rely on dubious, unproven, and expensive creams.

It has been used for decades and has a spectacular track record both anecdotally and in scientific research for being safe, effective, and consistent.

After you receive BOTOX, it can take about two weeks for the results to fully manifest, but after that, they will last for about three to four months. Unlike other procedures that address wrinkles, the injections only take about 10-15 minutes, and you won’t have to take any downtime following the treatment.

Plus, by getting BOTOX at Lake Nona Dental Group, you can trust that you’re receiving treatment from a staff with medical training (this isn’t the case at most spas!), and you can save yourself the hassle of having to go two different places for your skin and teeth.

BOTOX® FAQs

Is BOTOX Safe?

The botulinum toxin is considered safe when administered in small doses such as those found in BOTOX injections, and some researchers speculate that using it for cosmetic purposes may involve less risk than therapeutic uses since the doses involved are typically much smaller. However, you are more likely to experience unpleasant side effects if your treatment isn’t administered according to the standards of the FDA or if you receive the injections from an inexperienced professional. In the first 14 years since BOTOX received approval from the FDA, only 36 adverse events were recorded, and most of these were due to a patient’s underlying medical condition rather than the treatment.

Is BOTOX Permanent?

The effects of BOTOX last for about three months on average, but they may last for six months for some people. During this period, the treatment will help you maintain a healthy and vibrant appearance, and you can repeat the procedure as many times as you like. The protein that causes the desired effects breaks down in the body over time, and the exact duration of a BOTOX treatment depends on factors such as how old you are, your metabolism, how active you are, and exposure to toxins in the environment. BOTOX being temporary makes it a safer and more effective antiaging treatment since it gives the patient and their provider the chance to monitor health developments and change cosmetic goals if necessary.

How Can I Prolong My BOTOX Injections?

A few excellent ways to help the effects of your BOTOX treatment last longer include:

  • Avoid sun damage: BOTOX cannot address lines and wrinkles caused by sun damage since they aren’t due to muscle movements. Sun damage also causes an inflammatory response in your cells that can break the BOTOX protein down faster.
  • Try low-intensity workouts: Intense exercise boosts your metabolism, which can increase the rate at which the BOTOX protein breaks down. Sticking to moderate and low-intensity workouts may help your results last longer
  • Manage your stress: Stress can cause tension in the muscles targeted by BOTOX, causing the protein to break down more quickly. Constant high levels of stress can also accelerate the aging process.
  • Use moisturizer: Applying moisturizers that contain collagen and hyaluronic acid can help keep your skin looking full and healthy while slowing the rate at which the BOTOX protein breaks down in your facial muscles.
  • Abstain from nicotine: Smoking or vaping can break down the collagen in your skin cells, damaging them and limiting the effectiveness of your BOTOX treatment. These habits also cause fine lines that BOTOX cannot fix to form around your mouth and eyes.
  • Use a zinc supplement: In one study, researchers found that taking a 50-milligram zinc supplement led to a 30% increase in the duration of BOTOX results for 90% of its participants.

What Happens if I Stop BOTOX Injections?

If you cease BOTOX injections after many years of receiving them, the only effect will be the return of your wrinkles. However, BOTOX injections reduce the formation of new wrinkles, so you can expect to still look younger than you would if you had never received the treatment.  Your skin will relax as your facial muscles begin working normally again, but the amount of time this takes varies depending on how long you have been receiving BOTOX injections and how young you were when you started the treatments. If you decide to stop BOTOX injections but change your
